Small Animal Surgical Residency

INTRODUCTION
Animal Referral Centre (ARC) is currently recruiting for a Resident in Small Animal Surgery. The residency programme is approved by the European College of Veterinary Surgeons (ECVS). The residency is 3 years in duration, and will prepare the Resident for ECVS Board Exams in order to obtain specialist status.

• Candidates will be shortlisted and interviews will be held in May 2020
• Position commences July 2020

OUR PRACTICE

Our surgical caseload includes soft tissue surgeries (including surgical oncology cases), orthopaedic and neurology surgeries. Surgical theatres are fully equipped for arthroscopy, orthopaedic and soft tissue procedures.

We are well equipped with Synthes orthopaedic kits and power tools, surgical stapling equipment, Ligasure vessel sealing technology, IMEX ESF and HD arthroscopy. The clinic has a 64 slice Siemens CT, digital radiography, C-arm image intensification, ultrasound, endoscopy, mechanical ventilation, and dedicated cat and dog receptions, consulting rooms and treatment areas. We have a new rehabilitation centre with an underwater treadmill, operated by 2 canine hydrotherapists. We have access to off-site 3T MRI and radiation therapy. 

The residency programme is supported by an excellent multi-disciplinary team with specialists in small animal internal medicine, diagnostic imaging and dermatology on site, and a visiting cardiologist. Pathology and anaesthesia rotations have been arranged off-site for the residency programme.

The specialist services provided by the practice are supported by a team of dedicated emergency veterinarians and nurses, who enable 24-7 patient care.

WHAT KIND OF PERSON YOU NEED TO BE?
You need to be a highly motivated self-starter with:

  • The ability to work as part of a team and individually
  • An inclination to learn, and develop your skills
  • A desire to provide the best clinical service to all our patients and clients
  • A good sense of humour

The ideal candidate will have fulfilled a rotating and/or surgical internship at a referral hospital, have evidence of further education in surgery and show an interest in clinical research.

SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATION/STATUS/CITIZENSHIP REQUIREMENTS
You must fulfil the following requirements:

  • Be eligible to work in New Zealand
  • Completed a recognised rotating and/or surgical internship (preferred), or have at least 2 years experience in small animal practice
  • Have an excellent command of written and spoken English
  • Maintain a professional and caring approach in all aspects of your work
